Video - A New Game Called Towns !

So while perusing the yogscast channel I saw that one of the periphery members "Sips" has create a new channel and has been putting up play videos of a few games he's been playing.  One of these games is a game called "Towns".  It's a cross between a rts, the sims, a rpg and has some similarities even to minecraft. Its very much a sandbox game.  It's a lot of fun!!!

Check out the video below.  (NSFW: Language)

I'm not sure if there is a multiplayer component yet, and like minecraft its in its early stages so there are game crashes and other issues.  You can download the demo here:

TOWNS

You can also preorder the game for (at the time) $13.51, as when its released the game is said to retail for $20 or so.

The basics of the game is resource collecting, as well as building a "Town" where you villagers will live and work.  Like the sims you're in a isomeric "god like" view, and you then dictate your villagers to do your bidding.  Unlike other games, which are usually pretty forgiving with their gameplay, Towns is pretty unforgiving and you have to watch your villagers and make sure they have enough food, shelter, and protection otherwise the 11 people you start with will soon turn into corpses with stink clouds around them.  Especially if they wander off and die at the hands of the dreaded "FROG" mob! Though to be honest most of my villages died of starvation.

Once you get the basics down you can construct more elaborate buildings, mine and create underground caverns and other such cool things for your villagers.

Hunger Games , I Mean The Hungry Games!

So my girlfriend is a big fan of the Hunger Games novels, and is looking forward to the movie(s).   While I like to tease her that movie sounds just like Romeo and Juliet, just with food, (yes i know it doesn't have to do with food) or how its Twilight "Light" or shades of movie Dragon Slayer, etc., the movie does look might be a decent offering. and like Twilight i'll give the first movie a "chance".

With that said, I was smiling ear to ear when my girlfriend sent me the following video, and thus fueling even more teasing by me, about how the Hunger Games is all about food competition.  Check out this funny parody "The Hungry Games" from SketchY.

VIDEO: SIMCITY COMING IN 2013! Is it 2013 yet!?!!

Something that took me completely by surprise, and has me giggling like a little school girl, is the announcement at the GDC, (Game Developers Conference) in San Francisco this week, of SimCity 5! Hehehehehe!

Its been a long time coming since they made a true SimCity game.  While SimCity Societies was branded with "SimCity" it was essentially a failure and left you wanting more, something I detailed here.

SimCity 5 looks like a back to the basics game, and with today's processing power it's going to be absolutely gorgeous!  According to the press, the graphics will certainly be upgraded and I guess it'll have a "green" theme to it, which will be interesting.

Hopefully this time around they will include true multiplayer and allow you to broker deals with your friends playing in real time.  I've been disappointed in past games where they just allow you to download "snapshots" of other peoples cities but nothing that actually allows you to interact with your friends directly.  If they could somehow combine SimCity with Civilization that would be ideal for multiplayer SimCity.

Alright, enough talk.  Check out the trailer!

Maxis shut up and just take my money!  The only downside to all this news is that SimCity is going to be released in 2013!!?!  What! I've gotta wait how long?!

Is it 2013 yet?

How about now?!

Now?

I'm totally jones'n now for some SimCity action.  Bah!,  I think I've got Simcity 4 on this computer someplace!

Minecraft - Mojang's Broken Promises

Over www.makeuseof.com Craig Snyder recently wrote a controversial, and highly opinionated article, regarding the "broken promises" of Mojang, Notch in particular,  of their release of Minecraft 1.0.  The article entitled "Is Minecraft Really That Great?" mostly focuses on the negative aspects of what the release team over at Mojang has failed to do with Minecraft.  While the piece is labeled as an opinion piece, I think a few of his points are rather harsh, attack annimations, and sponge harvesting still missing, really?! A few others are spot on, e.g., Capture The Flag (CTF) and mod support (but those are coming still according to Mojang), but in general the piece is overall negative.

Craig says he's a Minecraft "fan" and will likely continue to play, with that said I think in general he's forgotten the reason why we play games, entertainment.   The fact that both Minecraft is fairly cheap, especially for those of us with lifetime free updates, when compared to other games, and is extremely easy to go into, it also allows you to express yourself creatively.  Not to mention all of the kick ass 3rd party content, like mods, youtube movies and webisodes, not to mention the parody skits, that entertain us all.

I'm not sure how old Craig is but he mentions "atari" at one point, but I think a lot of people these days forget, or never experienced, the "golden days" of computer gaming where a pixel was your entire character and it was all about the game play and story.  Which is why minecraft is as popular as it is because YOU create the story and it doesn't matter how hi-rez your character is or if there are attack animations or not.  Its about that first time you encountered a zombie and defeated him, or the first night you were running back to your base and took an arrow in the back from an unseen skeleton off to the right, or that nasty spider camped on top of your door.  It's a story you'll relate to other minecraft fans/friends and they know exactly the terror you felt or euphoria of finding that vien of diamonds.  Another of the key successes is the ability to mod minecraft to suit your gaming needs, so if you do want to have a minecraft MMO you can!  Like Lego's minecraft is ever expanding!

Head over to makeuseof and check out Craigs Article and see what you think. If you think i'm "out of my head", and Craig is "spot on", feel free to shoot me an email.

Minestation - A Weather Station For Your Minecraft World

What do you get when you combine an Arduino shield and a love for the video game Minecraft? How about an awesome electronics build that will tell you how the weather is topside in your blocky world while you toil away in the depths of your elaborate labyrinth of mineshafts.  Its not often that a few of my hobbies overlap, unless its photography, as that tends to work its way into most everything I do, but this is pure genius.

Over on the website www.radikaldesig.com (its in Spanish, and thanks to Google translate) they have the files for recreating your own, or you can eventually pick up one up once they get past the pre-alpha phase at minestation.me

Here is a nice video of it in action:
