Minecraft Update!

Over on the word of notch, Markus has released the latest update for both the Minecraft client and the server (server is mandatory as there are some protocol changes), but the BIG change I saw was this:

Names of sneaking players aren’t visible through walls, and are visible a much shorter distance

OMG! Rogues!!!  I love playing stealthy killing machines! mwhahaha!  This will make playing on a full on PVP, dog eat dog server very interesting!

Here is the over all list:

The client version is now 1.2.4
The server version is now 0.2.6 (mandatory update, there’s been protocol changes)

Bug fix list:
* Swords and other weapons now deal damage properly
* Added proper hurt animations and sounds to mobs and players
* Fixed dead players logging in as invisible ghosts
* Made arrows visible and deal damage
* Hoes now produce proper seeds
* Creepers make noises and animate before exploding
* Explosions animate properly
* No more infinite free arrows
* Server logging now appends to server.log rather than overwriting it
* Buttons and levers (and a few other blocks probably, it’s a general solution) animate properly
* Fixed minecarts (and pigs!) moving twice as fast as they should when ridden.
* The join server screen now remembers the last entered ip
* Increased chunk saving frequency on the server
* Leaving sneak mode no longer triggers a million sounds
* You can now see sneaking players
* Names of sneaking players aren’t visible through walls, and are visible a much shorter distance
* Snowballs!!

I’ll monitor for bugs for a while, then head home!
[edit:]
Server 0.2.6_01 no longer gives everyone 64 snowballs on connecting
[edit:]
Server 0.2.6_02 and client 1.2.4_01 now spawn other monsters than ONLY CREEPERS EVERYWHERE

Minecraft SMP Health Update!

Head over to minecraft.net and download the new client and server ASAP as the new awesome update is out!  Here is the snippet from Notch's blog:

SMP Health Update is out
I’m expecting bugs on this one, so I’m monitoring the usual channels (irc, twitter, email) extra carefully.

Basically everything I talked about in the last post is done, with some extras such as visible hurt animations (how did I forget that?) and visible fire on burning mobs.

The lighting still isn’t right, I need to rewrite it. I think I know what the problem is now, though. Or rather, I know what ONE problem is. You know when you’re traveling by boat, and you see weird strips of light on the ocean floor in multiplayer? That.

Also needed is visible armor on players and mobs (sheep!), and some tweaks to reduce laggy moving mobs. And bows and arrows.

There are a couple of new settings for the server:
pvp. True by default. If this is set to false, players can’t hurt other players.
spawn-monsters. True by default. Set to false to remove all monsters.
spawn-animals. Also true by default. Set to false to remove all animals.

[edit:]

Wow, that broke the game. Hold on while I try to fix stuff.

[edit:]

I’ve uploaded a new server and a new client, fixing the two major bugs I heard about.
I had to disable leaves decaying again (sorry!) because it caused infinite loops in certain situations.

Keep me posted, and I’ll keep fixing!"
  I'll likely be playing live soon on a couple of servers (or even my own), so keep an eye out for my  video channel on this page(brought to you by justin.tv)!  Or follow my twitter feed, where I usually announce my live play sessions.

Minecraft Update! And Minecraft LARP Video!

First and most important!  Notch released an update to both the single player client and the multiplayer server!  Awesome stuff in there, check it out:

Minecraft Alpha v1.2.2, Minecraft Server 0.2.4

General fixes:
* players and mobs in lava or fire no longer spam sound effects
* getting hit with a higher damage while recovering from a smaller one now works as intended
* lava flows further in the Nether
* zombie pigs eventually forgives
* added support for custom skin packs
* fixed duplicate buttons when resizing screens
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
* fixed volume sliders now saving properly

Multiplayer fixes:
* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats
* added (after lots of work) the ability to steer server-side boats
* added “no-animals” setting. if true, animals will immediately vanish
* added support for more animation settings. Currently it’s just the “riding” animation, but the same system will be used for sneaking

To make a texture pack, make a zip file that contains the files you wish to replace, then place that zip file in the texture pack folder. There’s a handy button ingame to open that folder immediately.

If you place a “pack.png” file in the root of the zip file, it’ll show up as a preview icon. Please make sure it’s square, and of an even 2^x size. For example, 128x128 pixels.
If you place a “pack.txt” file in the root of the zip file, the first two lines will show up as a description for the texture pack.

Then a friend of mine, Evil Miss Monkey , pointed me to a awesome Minecraft LARP Video:

Mis Adventures in Minecraft Episodes 11-14

I just posted up on my youtube channel the next exciting chapter that is my Minecraft adventuring saga.  Episodes 11-14 are now up and included in the full playlist which you can find here:

mis Adventures In Minecraft Full Playlist

Episode 11-14 has tidbits about the new update that occurred on Halloween as well as a small subsequent patch to fix a few bugs and the removal of the deeper more light spawning "feature" that notch himself indicated he thought sucked.  My guess he got caught rounding a corner and BAM creeper! Like I did, in a "secure" tunnel.  I also show you one way to "strip mine" for resources and the discussion of a simple log setup near your entrance can yield creature resources with zero or little effort.

Feel free to wander over to the youtube channel and watch the videos and then please rate and subscribe.  If you have any questions or want to see something specifically in Minecraft please leave your request in the comments section below and I'll include it in an upcoming video!

Also as you might have noticed I have a ustream widget for my ustream's ptsuks uncanny world channel where you can watch me playing video games live, lately minecraft solely.  I typically will tweet when I'm playing live, so you might want to follow me on twitter. So I hope you can catch me playing live sometime!

A Programmable Lock That Stop Working After Three Tries In Minecraft !

WOW! Check this out! Youtube user "Cheesejaguar" has created within minecraft a door with a programable lock that if the code is incorrectly supplied three times the door no longer functions!  Awesome!  The video  below gives the basics of what he's done and the door just stops functioning but I could see this used to trigger a trap of some kind certainly, maybe some hidden TNT blows up and kills you, or something like that. Can't wait for multiplayer!  Just another amazing thing that can be accomplished in Minecraft!

Hope you enjoyed this post and thanks for stopping by!

btw: I've heard that the guy who was building a cpu in minecraft is finished (sort of, he's creating buses for inputs today).  Once he puts up a video of the "final" completed project I'll post the vid here!
