Traktor X1 MK2 DJ Controller Has Arrived!!! BONUS: The Hidden Controls!

So it looks like ahead of the August release my twin pre-orders of the new version for the X1 controller shipped early!  Check out the goodness below!

I'm still playing around with the controls. I'm missing the 5-8 dedicated cue point buttons, but I'm sure there is a way to map them back to being more like the old x1 cue points.  I suppose I could just use the extra buttons on another controller entirely, like say my vci-400.

The strip controller is pretty fun to play around with and seems like a great point of access for some cool mappings, we'll have to see what everyone comes up with!  Great addition I think.

Here are some hidden controls and points of access:

KEYLOCK ON/OFF:
Hold SHIFT and press PLAY (this is like S2/S4).
KEYLOCK ADJUST:
Hold SHIFT + PLAY, then rotate the Deck's Loop Encoder. You'll see the transpose amount displayed in the Loop Display. Press and release the Encoder to reset to 0 semitones.
BPM ADJUST:
Hold the Deck's SYNC Button and turn the Deck's LOOP Encoder. Press LOOP Encoder while turning for large adjustments. Press and release encoder to reset to 0.0%.
RETURN TO START:
Hold SHIFT and press CUE (this is like S2/S4)
SNAP ON/OFF:
Hold SHIFT and press Left Load Button.
QUANTIZE ON/OFF:
Hold SHIFT and press Right Load Button.
FAST NAVIGATION:
Hold SHIFT and drag on the touchstrip while Deck stopped.
QUICK NUDGE:
When a Deck is playing and the Touchstrip is assigned to FX or Loop, you can hold SHIFT and drag on the Touchstrip to do pitch bends (that way you don't have to leave FX or Loop assign mode).

Video: Kontrol F1 - My New DJ Toy!

So one of the many hobbies I have, is playing around with DJ software/hardware and creating mixes/mashups, back in the day we called em mix tapes, for myself, friends, and as well as background music for videos/movies.

I've always made mixes, but i've never been a "real dj" per se, in the sense, i've never been on stage and performed a "set" or even "dj'd" a wedding/party.  The closest I ever came was making my mix tapes, putting em into the car stereos while on road trips with friends or throwing them into the high schools store audio system when I was in high school.

Last year, however, I picked up the Traktor Software from Native Instruments along with a few other controllers. A couple of Traktor X1's,  a VCI-100, and a pair of Dicer controllers. I then happened upon, and started following a blog out of San Francisco called DJ Tech Tools.  The more I played around with the software, watched videos from Ethan, the more I enjoyed myself and had dreams of creating great and wonderful mashups myself and friends would enjoy. So far I'm having a good time at it.  It's a pretty fun hobby.

Recently Native Instruments again set the dj scene abuzz with a new piece of kit called the Kontrol F1, they didn't release too much info, but it was to be released May 30th and was to tie into the Traktor software pretty tightly.  Eagerly I waited until I could pre-order and picked up two of em! If you want the in depth nitty gritty on the F1, here is the DJTech tools review and a video of the power of the F1:

Well, yesterday I got my hot little hands on em (they shipped early! Yay!) and i'm having a great time mixing, on the fly, with em. Woot!

The devices are primarily used with the revamped "remix decks" of Traktor 2.5 so you can capture"on the fly" loops, samples, and effects, then tweak it live for a more personalized dj set or recording.  Also remember these can be use as a generic midi controllers so if you have any software that can understand midi you can use these controllers!  Pretty sweet!

After the jump are some of the initial videos, from Native Instruments, showing you how to use the Kontrol F1.  This thing doesn't come with a manual but you really don't need it, its pretty intuitive!

Free Cake!?

Wow looks like someone is offering some free cake on this server, how nice! Don't mind if I get a cake and have a nice slice.  Mmmmm Cake......wait AHHHHHHHHH!

This video shows off the new cake block that Notch added when he was awarded the indie game of the year! (Check out the trivia section of the wiki) as well as the new dispenser block, combined in a truly evil way!

Notch has this video posted up on on his blog Word of Notch , or you can find the original here !  Now go off and make traps my flying little monkeys!!

Arrows, eggs, and snowballs are the only things at this time that will fire out of the dispenser when triggered and may cause damage,e.g., arrows. All other items are "dispensed" as if dropped by another player or as if you are harvesting the resource, e.g., with a floating icon of the item.

Mis Adventures in Minecraft Episodes 11-14

I just posted up on my youtube channel the next exciting chapter that is my Minecraft adventuring saga.  Episodes 11-14 are now up and included in the full playlist which you can find here:

mis Adventures In Minecraft Full Playlist

Episode 11-14 has tidbits about the new update that occurred on Halloween as well as a small subsequent patch to fix a few bugs and the removal of the deeper more light spawning "feature" that notch himself indicated he thought sucked.  My guess he got caught rounding a corner and BAM creeper! Like I did, in a "secure" tunnel.  I also show you one way to "strip mine" for resources and the discussion of a simple log setup near your entrance can yield creature resources with zero or little effort.

Feel free to wander over to the youtube channel and watch the videos and then please rate and subscribe.  If you have any questions or want to see something specifically in Minecraft please leave your request in the comments section below and I'll include it in an upcoming video!

Also as you might have noticed I have a ustream widget for my ustream's ptsuks uncanny world channel where you can watch me playing video games live, lately minecraft solely.  I typically will tweet when I'm playing live, so you might want to follow me on twitter. So I hope you can catch me playing live sometime!

The (mis) Adventures of Minecraft! Episodes 4-6

Here are the next four videos for my further (mis) Adventures in the world of Minecraft.  I've also added them to the minecraft playlist for your continuous playback enjoyment!  These videos are up on my youtube channel which can be found here:

PTSuks Uncanny World YouTube Channel

The videos show you how to construct hide armor or metal armor (same recipes just use a different resource), the start of the construction of the "Tower Of Power" (a identifiable landmark that you can use to navigate back to from afar) as well as the horror of falling from said tower, at night with full creature bloom, and then trying to retrieve all the gear that sprang forth from your corpse like a exploded piƱata when you hit the ground! Over and Over.  Its not a pretty site!

So here is the first of the four videos and check out the rest on my youtube channel!  Please let me know what you would like to see in the comments below and please rate and subscribe to the video channel!

Minecraft! A Game of Dangerous Legos!

The guys over at Penny Arcade have a comic and article up entitled Mine All Mine, Part One and Mine All Mine, Part Two both comics are a humorous take on how fun and addictive the video game known as  Minecraft! can be!

More or less Minecraft is a throwback of sorts to old school gaming very reminiscent of UO (if it was single player). The game is an infinite sandbox game where the world is generated around you and you'll never "wrap" around if you go off and only walk in one direction.  The game also allows you to create gear, buildings, and mechanisms using the basic and humble resource "blocks" that make up the entire world.  It reminds me very much of playing with Lego's as a kid, and that alone is a big draw for lots of folks.

The other main aspect of the game is its a survival game in which there is a day and night cycle and to survive the night, where evil creatures spawn and want to eat you alive, you must build a shelter!  Once you get the basic shelter down you feel compelled to create more elaborate tunnels and rooms to hang out in, decorate, and scheme in. You'll find yourself saying "just one more steel bar and I can build X" multiple times for various things.  Once you do get more complex items you can start crafting ladders, minecarts, mine cart tracks, mine carts powered by coal that will go around and around, you can create switches, logic gates and other mechanisms to which to astound your friends.  To do all this, you again must mine for your resources and watch out for the evil creatures trying to kill you! Its a vicious cycle of fun!

There is a physic engine too, in that water will flow along a path if you create one, you can also drown if you tunnel under a lake and hit the wrong stone flooding your mineshaft, or if you hit a vein of gravel or sand you could be suffocated as the loose material rains down on your head blocky head.  You can also create devious traps for protection or to "harvest" the goodly creatures of minecraft such as the mu-cows for hides, the sheep for wool blocks, pigs for their BACON, and the infamous chickens (which look like ducks!) that provide feathers. These creatures hop around the world care free and constantly let you know where they are by various sounds.   You can also harvest seeds and grow crops if you've decided an all vegetarian diet is the way to go and these can be cultivate deep underground in your own personal terrarium free of zombie infestation!

The game is only in Alpha and is deceivingly complex even in its current state, and of course highly addictive.  I had been following the news of the game but was never interested until the penny arcade article, when it was said there was to be a free weekend because of the server crashing as a result of the influx of people from the PA exposure.  I decided to sit down and play, which ended up getting me hooked and so purchasing the game for $13.60 (he's charging 9.95 euros so exchange rates will vary the actual rate).

I'd recommend getting in on the game now as the developer indicated that he will be raising the price once it goes into beta, and if you purchase now you get free updates and releases for the life of the game (how ever long that is) and its not a subscription based game either! Take that WOW, WAR, etc,.

I'll post a another article with some videos I've taken showing you how to survive your first night and just how dangerous minecraft can be, and this is just single player!  Once multiplayer evolves a bit more and I'm in a world with others with the same killer instincts I'm guessing I'll have some severe dejavu of UO and the cold sweats you would get venturing out in the wild not knowing if danger lurked around a corner or if the fellow you just happened upon mining in his underwear is a blood thirsty killer just waiting for you to turn your head so he can drive that diamond pick axe into your skull! Mwhahaha!

Hope you enjoy the article and thanks for stopping by!
